A few members of the FishingTownsvilleForum.net got together for a fish with our expert Red fisherman, Ozbee. The following is a report compiled by forum member Scott Nth Qld. Thanks Scott for the great report and pics.

I ran into Graham, a member of the Fishing Townsville Forum, in Pro tackle over the weekend, and after we cursed the weather for a bit, and discussed the upcoming lull, we decided we’d try and push out wide on Tuesday afternoon and have a go for some reds. Once that was decided, it didn’t take long for his 680 Patriot to fill with willing anglers which included one of Graham’s mates Max, another Graham, John, and myself (all except Max are members of the forum). Next was for me to arrange for an early knock off from work on Tuesday and Wednesday off, which came at a price, a few fillets of prime red fish, easy.
So Tuesday arrived and the weather was looking acceptable, some last minute hiccups delayed my departure from work, so after picking up John, I made double quick time down the Graham’s place to load and go.

Boat loaded, and in the water, we head to Graham’s BIG RED spot after about 2 hrs travel though about 1.5m seas. Anchor goes down and lines are dropped, a couple of small emperor and some box worthy big mouth nannies are brought up, then the anchor pulls. We try and try again to reset, allowing plenty of room for the boat to take hold and drift back over the mark to no avail, after several more attempts, a load more line was let out to finally set the anchor only to find we are now 100m away and sitting over nothing. Screw it we thought, let’s just have a drop and see what’s here.
Action was slow to say the least, but we managed to pull up a few hussar, a prime red bait (use red to catch red, remember that) and a couple of lost rigs due to some mysterious structure that was not showing up on the sounder. The tide finally stopped, and with everyone but Max and myself having a kip, the reds finally come on the bite with us landing a few in quick succession. John pokes his head out of the cabin and sees the carpet of red, decides to join us. The reds were being a bit fussy, with many a missed strike and pulled hooks, the fishing wasn’t exactly hot, but consistent, which I appreciated, pulling big fish up from 65m of water was not something I wanted to do hell for leather. I was struggling, especially after pulling up a 2m long leopard shark and a huge chinaman, I know really see the value in an electric reel like Graham has. An epic battle also ensued with John hooking up on a true denizen of the deep, we have no idea what it was, but a cobia was ruled out, it wasn’t fast enough, shark was ruled out after 10 minutes or so, for the same reason and it was very intent on where it was heading, I seem to think it was a massive cod or monster groper because of the slow steady tail beats and its seemingly effortless task of stripping 50lb braid against 30lb of drag.
The fishing continued like this all through the night, very consistent with some snodgers amongst them, including a 12kg emperor caught by Graham, and a 12kg Large Mouth Nannygai caught by max, and boy these fish were huge!

As the current picked up the fish got fewer and fewer, so it now being about 4.30am, I decide to go and have a kip. Between then and sunrise only a couple more nannygai were caught. When I awoke, Graham decided we’d have a quick shot for some trout before heading in. Not wanting to change from the plough to a reef pick, which would be a right pain in the arse, Graham says we’ll drift over a couple of bommies. So it didn’t take long and nearly all of us lost at least one rig, but in that time we managed to get 6 trout and a nice red throat, to put into the small esky, as the big 300ltr box/seat was well and truly full and looking very sexy, filled to the brim with nothing but red.

With a the tide going out and us having to beat it to get out of the water, we high tailed it home, tired, sore and very, very satisfied with the nights effort.
All up 5 anglers ended up with a total of 42 fish, consisting of 22 big mouth nannies, 11 emperor, 6 trout, 2 spanglies and 1 red throat.
I sometimes wonder why I put myself through this sort of punishment, but all I have to do is flick on the PC and look at the photo’s…”Oh, that’s why”.
