Alva Beach Flathead

We fished Alva Beach yesterday morning for the first time in probably more than a year. I use to love walking the beach here tossing lures for flathead when the conditions weren't right for the boat. But since owning the tinnie Barra have been too big of an attraction. But the electric on the tinnie has been our of action for a couple of weeks now, and I have not had a line in the water at all in that time. So looking for something different and more relaxing we headed off for Alva.

It was a high tide of about 3.2m just on sunrise, ideal for chasing lizards. The sun was just rising as we pulled into the carpark. It didn't take too long and Dad had the first fish to shore. Without a measuring tape it was too close to call and was released. Dad was second for a fish too, and a much better one. Guessing around 50cm it went in the eski for keeps.

I still hadn't had a touch, but it wasn't too long of a wait when a solid fish took the plastic. A few good runs on a lightly set drag and she was pulled ashore. The biggest fish so far. It joined Dad's for dinner.

For the next hour we enjoyed some very good fishing. Several lost fish, a few small ones and numerous missed hits. In all we took home a feed of 4 solid fish and had released several smaller ones. But by about 8am the tide started running out pretty hard, and we couldn't raise another scale. We looked around several locations both up and down the beach, even got the Pajero onto the sand for a bit, but to no avail.

We left about 10:30am for an early mark and lunch at home. A great morning thats relaxing and easy. No boat to clean and a good feed of fish for the wife and kids for dinner. What more could you ask for?

I fished with a 70mm Squidgie fish in pody colour for the pro range on a 1/8 oz jig head. Its my favourite lure for Flathead and rarely fails. I used a Shimano Stella 1000fe on a T-curve 661 rod and 8lb PowerPro. Rigged with a 20lb leader of about 1.5m in length, its more than capable of handling even the biggest flathead on the beach.

Townsville Fishing and Outdoor Expo

Our 16th Annual Event since 1995.

Townsville's annual Fishing and Outdoor Expo will again be held at the Townsville Turf Club at Cluden on the weekend of May 28th and 29th.

This annual Mecca for boaties, fishers and lovers of the great outdoors has now become the largest fishing, boating and outdoor recreation expo in north Queensland.

Townsville Sportfishing Club President Morry Suffield said that the strong support of local boat dealers who have supported the show wholeheartedly for the past three years has been the catalyst for the growth of the show, and over the past few years the growing numbers of camper vans, motor homes and camper trailers has seen demand for space at the show grow to the seams.

"The display of hundreds of boats at our show has been our strength and while again we will have a fantastic range of boats, this year we are looking to expand the outdoor focus to 4WD's, motor bikes, and jet skis. If it's built for outdoors and you can have fun on it... it will be at our event in May" Mr Suffield said.

While post Yasi rebuilding and the tough economic climate have put a frown on most north Queensland faces, the take up of exhibition space at this years Fishing and Outdoor Expo has been outstanding and organisers are forecasting a record number of displays in the even's 16th year.

"Fishing and outdoor pursuits are really some of the cheapest forms of family entertainment and no matter how tight the budget is, wetting a line with the kids or mates is still a popular pastime and the growing number of recreational fishers is proof of that" Mr Suffield said.

"We are all over the rain, the cyclone and the big wet. Now its time to think about our great outdoors lifestyle and get out and enjoy what north Queensland has to offer."

As part of the rebranding of North Queensland as being "open for business", Mr Suffield said that there would be a number of regional tourism displays at the show, selling the message that despite the cyclone and the wet, places like the Cassowary Coast, the Whitsundays and all the regions in between are great places for locals to have a cost effective holiday.

This year's event will see as many as twenty new exhibitors with expanded display sites being created to cater for demand.

The event at Cluden Racecourse now draws 10 000 fishing, boating and outdoor enthusiasts each year. Attractions this year will include the very popular Yamaha Super Tank and the Sportfishing Club will again be manning its club display and giving talks on rigging lures, throwing a cast net, targeting specific species of fish and other interesting topics.

The 16th annual Townsville Fishing and Outdoor Expo will be held at the Cluden Park Racecourse on May 28th & 29th from 8.00am - 5.00pm Saturday, and 8.00am to 4.00pm Sunday. Admission: Adults $10, Children U14 - free.
