Baptist Church Fishing Club - May 2008 Results

The Baptist Church Fishing Club’s 9th annual Lucinda Fishing Tournament was a fantastic weekend of fishing and making new friends, with 120 club members and visitors taking part in this year’s event. A huge thank you to God for this awesome part of the world, to our generous sponsors and to the great bunch of people who make up our Club and made this one of our best Lucinda camps ever!

Despite huge tidal run and persistent strong winds, the Weigh Master was kept extremely busy again this month with a total of 30 anglers weighing 65 fish for a total weight of 115.28kg. An additional 76 fish were released and 2 big and very tasty mud crabs were also weighed. Final results are posted below (apologies to Rob, Mal and Bryan for the points mix up!) Congratulations to everyone who got amongst the action, and what a close finish with only 2 points between Rob and Mal!

Fingermark Second cast on Sunrise

Well strange times indeed. We went for a fly fish on Saturday hoping to chase some mackeral. Instead we got to our mark of Pallarenda and landed a nice fingermark in the 65cm class. This one on a sinking head line, 12wt rod with a 4/0 white/red fly. We then fished on for a few hours and landed nothing, so off to Rattlesnake and Herald Island. Again no real luck back to the starting point and finished with a few seapike. Not to bad, onto Sunday, different story had a phone call and of we went to a nice freshwater location just north of Townsville. We had some thoughts of a couple of sooties on the 7wt. As luck would have it, we landed 4 sooties, a couple of tarpon and dropped a nice barra. Strange days indeed, with the cold snap there was no thought of catching a barra but now maybe next time! Even though we started as a salt water weekend it ended nicely in the fresh. Here is to next week!

Seabreeze got it right!

Well earlier in the week Seabreeze was predicting good weather all weekend. But things changed a little by late in the week. With the final prediction of Saturday being a ripper, and blowing up Sunday. Things couldn't have been more spot on. And if you didn't fish Saturday you were a fool, and if you fished Sunday...well I hope you got back ok?

We (Tania, the boys and myself) did a quick pack of the boat Friday after work and hit the water about 6pm. I was hoping to be a little earlier so as to have a fish for some Mackerel off West Point before sunset. But instead we headed straight into 5-beach bay and anchored for the night. The kids thought it was great having dinner and sleeping on the boat.

Next morning it was a quick try for some live bait and then straight out to our mark out the back of Rattlesnake. We were not too lucky on the live bait, only getting a few small baits in the 1/2 hour or so we tried. On arrival out our mark things didn't look to good. Not a lot showing on the sounder. We drifted the mark several times with high speed metal with nothing more than a couple of small Trevalley. I put a live bait down for Tania, and pretty quickly she was hooked up to a nice fish. Turned out to be a good Coral Trout. We kept on for a couple of hours before deciding it just wasn't going to happen. Then it was back to West Point.


Back at West Point we again tried metal on a few marks. This time we were semi-successful, landing 1 good fish and missing several others. But with it getting quite late in the day the bite didn't last long. We had lunch and headed back into 5-beach bay for a swim. I decided to wait around and give my West Point marks another go in the late afternoon.


At about 4pm we left the bay and headed back to have one last try for some Mackerel. It proved to be a good choice. We didn't fish to long, but managed another 4 good doggies before it was time for home. Could have been a lot more, but I missed several hard hits, and we wanted to be back at the ramp before dark.

While I was anticipating a better catch, a good time was had by all.

Fishing Townsville Email Addresses

Since I have purchased the fishingtownsville.net domain name, I am now able to provide people with an @fishingtownsville.net email address. This will essentially create a Gmail account with that address. To access mail you would go to http://mail.fishingtownsville.net/ and enter username and password details. Gmail also has the ability to use POP and IMAP mail access. So you can use a normal email client too. The following email addressess have already been created.

Lucinda Fishing Competition

The May-day long weekend saw the annual Baptist Church fishing competition in Lucinda. This year had an exceptional turn out from its members, no doubt due in part to the great prizes organised by the committee. Dion will shortly post a full report of results of the weekend, but in the mean time here is an account of my experience.

Friday 2/5/08
Finish work at 3.10. Get home, pack, hook up boat and try leave by 4! That didn't happen, but I was not too far off schedule. I arrived at Lucinda about 6.15pm and set up the tent (raised the targa on the boat as I decided sleeping in the cabin was WAY easier). The club put on a sausage sizzle for dinner that night. Dion gave a briefing and ran over the competition rules and Greg (Chaplin) blessed the fleet. As the competition didn't begin until midnight, I decided not to fish. But we did go for a walk along the Jetty.

Saturday 3/5/08
Waking to the predicted 15-20knot winds already blowing at 4.30 in the morning, we knew we wouldn't be going far. The plan was to at least get to the end of the Jetty for a couple of hours. Ward was in the boat with me, and his boys (Liam and Chris) and Julie took his boat. We bumped our way out the channel and to the end of the terminal. It was lumpy, and we didn't think we would last there more than a few minutes. I threw around a few metal slices at high speed, and Ward put in a fly. I hooked up reasonably quickly, landing a nice Queenfish in the 5kg range. So it was decided that putting up with the weather might just be worthwhile. We drifted there for a few hours, with a steady flow of quality fish. In the end I had landed 2 good Queenfish, 1 GT and a School Mackerel. In the other boat, Liam had a Queenfish, GT and Golden Trevalley. But he had also released about 7 other good GT's. Back to the ramp and out of the water by 10am meant we didn't have to deal with the low tide at the mouth of Dungeness.

After cleaning up Ward and I ventured down to the beach to try for a Flathead. I was hoping to get my 5th and final fish to weigh. No such luck. Weigh-in was at 4pm, and after dinner we headed to the Jetty to try for a Tarpon. Again, we didn't have any success. I managed to hook and drop one. But there were not even many rises from them in the water.

Sunday 4/5/08
4.30 rise again. Forecast much the same, but this time it was pretty good early. Jordan was with me today, and Ward in his boat. Dion joined up at the Jetty in his boat with 3 of the other guys. Oh, and Steve took his boat out there too. All of us worked the area pretty hard with little to no success. Dion headed out wide about 9am. I looked to follow, but the weather was starting to turn. Lots of white caps and it was only getting worse. So we stuck it out. Then on our last drift past the Jetty Jordan hooked up. A quality Queenfish, again in the 5kg class. A lucky capture, as the handle on the spin reel broke off mid fight!


Back to the ramp and then off to the beach again. I didn't stick it out down there too long. It was obvious I was not going to get that Flatty.

That night was a BBQ dinner put on by the club (and a good one too). I donated a Queenfish to BBQ whole. And everyone seen to enjoy with nothing but a skeleton left. Then it was time for presentations. I managed to win Saturdays weigh-in, the lure division and overall Senior Male. So I was quite chuffed!!

We tried for another Tarpon before bed, but given the comp was over we didn't try too hard.

Monday 5/5/08
Given there were many families that don't have boats and couldn't get out on the water, Dion organised for a few boats to do a trip up the channel and around Haycock Island. I volunteered to take some people in my boat. In total 3 boats went for run. It was beautiful up the channel, classed out most of the way. I think everyone appreciated this offer and had a great time. Especially the kids.



Then it was time to head home......
